The Michigan Fraternal Order of Police applauds the Michigan House of Representatives for passing HB 5574, HB 5575, and HB 5576 — legislation designed to better protect Michigan’s first responders from intimidation, harassment, and threats because of the profession they have chosen to serve. This legislation is also commonly referred to as a “Halo Law.”
HB 5574 imposes criminal penalties on individuals who intentionally intimidate, threaten, or harass a first responder while performing their duties. HB 5575 establishes key definitions within the law to ensure consistent enforcement, and HB 5576 incorporates these offenses into Michigan’s sentencing guidelines to provide appropriate consequences for those convicted.
Every day, Michigan’s first responders answer the call, often placing themselves in harm’s way to protect others. They should not have to fear targeted harassment or interference simply for doing their jobs and serving their communities.
We thank the members of the Michigan House who voted in support of this important legislation and now urge the Michigan Senate to stand with Michigan’s first responders, their families, and the communities they serve by passing HB 5574, HB 5575, and HB 5576.
Protecting those who protect us should be a bipartisan priority.
